This SUMI workshop will take place at Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre (NIMC)—a Japanese Historic Site in New Denver.
The program starts with a 45 min tour through the NIMC, after which Japanese Canadian artist Tsuneko Kokubo (aka Koko) guides you in an exploration of SUMI (ink) drawing, using brush and pen. SUMI is a simple, yet elegant art form handed down to Japan from China. Artists use a minimal amount of brush strokes to create subtle ink paintings that stimulate the imagination. This workshop with Tsuneko will take place inside the Centennial Hall on site, with the opportunity to go outside to draw as well. The NIMC is celebrating it's 30th anniversary this year.
